To Aru Kagaku No Railgun 20

The girls meet Uiharus new roommate, Haruue Erii, and take her out for a night of fireworks. However, all is not as it seems with Erii…

So the episode opens with Kongou Mitsuko encountering what appears to be another earthquake, however all her dolls suddenly float up and mass raep her or something. Seriously, this girl can’t catch a break can she? haha

We cut to the next day where Uiharu is informed she’ll have a new roommate from now on:

Later that day, the rest of the girls meet up to help Erii unpack her things and get settled. After, they all decide to go out, but Kuroko reminds Uiharu that they have a joint Judgement meeting with Anti-Skill, so they’ll have to meet up after. Uiharu assures Eri that Saten and Misaka are nice people, however gives a warning:

Satens response: “What are you talking about?”. LOL, seems it’s a special move reserved only for Uiharu.

Later, at the Judgement-Anti-Skill meeting, they are told that the recent earthquakes, and also spreading rumors of incidents involving what many believe are Poltergeists, are related to a mass of something called the RSPK Syndrome:

And then they are introduced to a woman named Telestina, of another group known as M.A.R.

Telestina explains that the RSPK Syndrome is something that happens when an esper loses control and has a huge outburst of their powers. She explains that these explosions have been happening frequently recently in concentrated areas, giving the effect of an earthquake. She says they speculate that the reason this may be happening is related to the Occult (INDEX reference?!), and wants Judgements cooperation to help stop students spreading the rumor around to avoid a mass-panic.

After the meeting is over, Uiharu and Kuroko meet the others over at the arcade. They hang out there for a bit, until something catches Haruues eye:

and has a MOE moment, smashing into the glass.

They all decide to throw on Yukatas and go and watch that night. Of course, Uiharu and Haruue being the MOE-blobs they are, FAIL at putting on their Yukata:

Meanwhile, Shirai also has a problem with how Misaka wears her Yukata:

Eventually, they all meet up at the festival, and take in all the attractions. Including Misaka of course:

MOE Misaka!

She just can’t resist the gero huh? While at the festival, a group of trucks catches their eyes:

Seems M.A.R. is in the area as well as a precaution. As Kuroka laments that they’re an eyesore, Saten suggests they move to a different spot to take in the show.

Meanwhile, back at Judgement HQ, Konori-Senpai is hard at work trying to figure out what’s going on with the RSPK Syndrome:

Oh boy, if she drinks that much milk I can only imagine what it'll do to her breasts!

She has a hunch that the simultaneous outbreaks of RSPK syndrome may be caused by a deliberate interference to an Espers AIM diffusion field (yeah, if this is flying over your head too, don’t worry about it). And that same moment, Haruue starts to act weird and walks off on her own. As Konori phones Kruoko to tell her the theory, another Poltergeist incident happens.

However, just before Uiharu is smashed by the pole, cue in the PINK-GUNDAM!

Telestina in a M.A.R. mech shows up just in time to save Uiharu and Haruue. However, Haruue still seems to be out of it, and holds her locket the same time as another familiar face…

Well, that certainly ended on a high note! Also, I can’t remember the last time a Railgun episode actually ended in a “to be continued” situation. Looks like we’re finally getting into some significant plot movement.

If you haven’t noticed by now, Haruue is the same girl from Episode 17 who Tessou helped find her locket. And if you don’t remember, the picture inside the locket was of the child-error girl who was involved in Kiyamas experiment way back from the Level-Upper incident. Which makes it all the more interesting that Kiyama is shown holding a locket at the same time as Haruue. You have to think that both are connected to that little girl somehow, and most definitely it’s gonna be a primary plot-line later to come. Also, as you can tell by her antagonist-smirk in that last shot, Telestina is most likely gonna be one of the “final-bosses”, much how Kiyama was in the first arc. And speaking of Kiyama, how is she out of Jail already?? It can’t have been that long since the Level-Upper thing.

As for Haruue herself, while I know she has something she is hiding, don’t you think that she’s almost exactly the same as Uiharu? What I mean by that is that they’re both Yui-type MOE-blobs! Seriously, that must be the REAL reason they were paired up to be roommates!

Although I didn’t like that it took them so long t get to this point, I do love how in this show all the little sub-plots from these previous “filler” episodes are starting to come together in a bigger picture. Of course, I should have seen this coming, because they did the exact same thing with the Level-Upper arc, but still it’s kinda cool that they do it this way, and it shows that whoever is running this show does have the big picture in mind.

As for speculation, I honestly have no clue. One of the nags I have with Railgun was the same BIG problem I had with Index: they sometimes babble on too much about the technical things, and it’s sometimes hard to keep up. Like for this episode, I had to re-watch it one or two times just so I could get the jist of all that RSPK and Poltergeist talk. And now they’re throwing in AIM fields as well.  While I do find all this talk interesting, I wish they would slow it down a tad and let people of less intelligence like myself catch the details as well. Oh well, this story interests me, and I’m looking forward to (hopefully) more answers next week!

An of course, no Railgun is complete…

Without some one sided yuri-love!
